off the clock
The PNGN‑1.
Somewhere inside this old sampler's oscilloscope screen, a penguin is on an adventure — and the music is its weather. Power on and the machine starts playing by itself: warbling tape-worn pads, a slow pulse, a big cold reverb. The desk of gear below is yours. Push the drums into glitching breaks and its world storms into chaos; let everything fall away and it freezes into stasis. Somewhere in between — a warm groove, an aurora, fish. The little one tires as it travels: bring the world down to stasis and the machine plays it a slow plucked lullaby while it sleeps. And when a leopard seal comes hunting, sometimes the kindest thing you can do is make a terrible noise.
the machine plays itself — you steer it · sampler pads on keys 1–8 · F drops a drum fill · M shifts the mood · B brings in the atmosphere synth · G stabs the acid bass · R scans the shortwave — there are four stations hiding in the static · hold V to freeze the tape loop · walking tires the penguin — send the world to stasis and it sleeps to a lullaby · fish are food · the leopard seal fears nothing except chaos · everything is synthesised live, nothing is sampled — despite the chassis
